La Junta High School's Trent Johnston drives for a layup against Florence Saturday at Tiger Gym. The Tigers defeated the Huskies 54-41.

Trent Johnston has been a force for the La Junta High School boys basketball team so far this season.

It was no different in last Saturday's game against Florence. Johnston scored 21 points, with 14 coming in the second half, grabbed 18 rebounds and blocked five shots as the Tigers came from behind to defeat the Huskies 54-41 at Tiger Gym.

"It was a good team win," La Junta coach Greg Lovato said. "Everybody had something to do with it, so it was a good win."

"We played as a team," Johnston said. "That's the biggest part. We like to score with each other and not score by ourselves."

Johnston, a 6-foot-4 junior, is averaging a double-double on the season with 15 points and 14 rebounds per contest.

"Trent's playing like a beast," Lovato said. "That guy never gives up and he just plays. He's loving the game right now, and he's a great part for us on the defensive side. He changes a lot of shots and that helps a lot.

"I don't look too much at stats," Lovato added. "I look at team wins. I won't say anything about stats because I'm all about the team. So he's doing a great job."

Even though Johnston is averaging a double-double, it is all about the team with him.

"It helps to have good looks and whenever they double team or whatever the other defense does, I can rely on my teammates and we can look to score there," Johnston said.

This year is more fun for Johnston because his younger brother, Trevor, a freshman, is also on the team.

"It's a lot of fun," Johnston said. "I enjoy it a lot."
