Rocky competes at Cheyenne Mountain Stampede
The Rocky Ford High School cross country teams were in Colorado Springs on Saturday for the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede pre-state meet at the Norris Penrose Event Center.
The Lady Meloneers finished seventh in the Class 2A girls race with 105 points. They were led by Katie Preciado, who was 15th in 24:11.70. Kaysa Kurtz-Merwin was 17th in 24:30.50, Kailene Black was 36th in 26:35.20, Martha Castaneda was 43rd in 29:06.70 and Kaylee Tucker was 53rd in 31:14.10.
Buena Vista won the Class 2A girls meet with 13 points. Wray was second with 46, Heritage Christian was third with 52, Strasburg was fourth with 84 and Peyton was fifth with 91.
Buena Vista's Zaila Smith was the individual medalist in the race as she had a time of 19:32.80.
Rocky was eighth in the Class 2A boys race with 131 points. Leading the Meloneers was Josh Snyder, who was eighth in 18:33.20. Jason Hernandez was 31st in 20:10.10, Ethan Robinson was 42nd in 20:44.50, Fredrick Rikhof was 50th in 21:23.40 and Tim Cardenas was 54th in 22:01.50.
Peyton took the Class 2A boys race with 48 points. St. Mary's was second with 56, Heritage Christian was third with 57, Thomas MacLaren was fourth with 65 and Buena Vista was fifth with 95.
Kidus Bradshaw of the Lotus School for Excellence won the individual championship in 16:50.70.
This Friday, Rocky will host the Southeastern Colorado Cross Country Invitational. Also invited to the meet are La Junta, Lamar, Kim/Branson, Limon, Primero, Springfield and Rye.
The first race begins at 9 a.m.
